Sharing Experiences in Practice // Partage d’expériences et de bonnes pratiques

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound effect on the provision of health services across the globe and is further magnifying the existing barriers faced by people who use drugs in accessing harm reduction services. Programmes have had to adapt, and efforts are being made to enhance accessibility and ensure the continuity of harm reduction services in a context that is changing daily

As is the case with all vulnerable populations during COVID-19, new guidance documents and statements are being drafted and published every week. Whilst these are undoubtedly important resources in guiding our responses in these unprecedented times, it is vital to ensure an ongoing dialogue among programme implementers in the field and to share practical experiences in continuing and adapting harm reduction services during COVID-19 to ensure that people who use drugs continue to have access to the services and support that they need.

At an initiative of Médecins du Monde, a webinar on COVID-19 and Harm Reduction Programme Implementation: Sharing Experiences in Practice took place on Monday 6 April and aimed to facilitate an interactive discussion to share practical experiences on how to maintain and adapt harm reduction services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Within a very short timeframe, and following discussion with partner organisations, this webinar was organised in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, International Network of People Who Use Drugs, Harm Reduction International, and European Network of People Who Use Drugs.

Dans des délais très courts et suite à des échanges avec des organisations partenaires, ce webinaire a été organisé en collaboration avec l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé, l’Office des Nations Unies contre la drogue et le crime, l’INPUD (International Network of People Who Use Drugs), HRI (Harm Reduction International), et EuroNPUD (European Network of People Who Use Drugs).

Around 400 people were registered, from 230 different organisations in 56 countries. The success of the co-organisation of this first webinar and the mobilisation of the key global stakeholders in harm reduction and drug policy demonstrates the need for this type of initiative and the importance of sharing challenges, good practices and practical interventions in the field. MdM, WHO, UNODC, INPUD, HRI and EuroNPUD have agreed to continue to collaborate on future webinars in this series. Additionally, this initiative has resulted in a spin-off series of regional webinars that are being organised by WHO and UNODC specifically targeted at decision makers and government officials.
