On Tuesday 8 November 2022, in the Plenary Chamber of the European Parliament in Brussels, Médecins du Monde Greece was awarded the European Citizen’s Prize 2022 for its work in supporting the displaced population from Ukraine, seeking safety and assistance in neighboring countries and in Greece.
Awarded every year by the European Parliament, the Prize goes to projects organized by people or organizations that encourage: mutual understanding and closer integration between people in the EU, cross-border cooperation that builds a stronger European spirit, EU values and fundamental rights. This year, 300 applications were submitted, out of which 30 winners were selected.
The award was presented by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mrs. Dita Charanzová, to the President of Médecins du Monde Greece, Mrs. Hara Tziouvaras, who noted “We would like to thank the Members of the European Parliament for this honorable distinction, which recognizes the work of Médecins du Monde Greece in defending human rights, commitment and solidarity. Drawing on our many years of experience, Médecins du Monde has been able to respond directly and effectively to the needs of thousands of people displaced from Ukraine in search of safety. We would also like to thank all those who have supported us – and continue to support us – by volunteering or even by contributing financial and material assistance. The trust they have shown once again in Médecins du Monde Greece, fills us with confidence for all that we can achieve together, as active members of Civil Society.”
Since the beginning of the hostilities, Médecins du Monde Greece has developed its activities both on the Romanian/Ukrainian border and in Greece, while in a short time its activities were broadened inside Ukraine. To date, Médecins du Monde has delivered more than 80 tons of humanitarian aid inside Ukraine, including essential items, food, medicines and health materials, while medical interventions are now taking place in 6 regions of Ukraine. In Greece, through the Open Polyclinics in Athens and Thessaloniki, Médecins du Monde continues to provide medical services, psychosocial support and material assistance to Ukrainian citizens who have come to Greece.
